The sculptor Camille Claudel (French, 1864–1943) was described by one contemporary as “something unique, a natural rebel, a woman of genius.” In 1883 Rodin took her on as a student and studio assistant, but the two artists soon became close collaborators and lovers. This contemplative portrait of Claudel explores the power of the intellect and the sculptor’s ability to bring life and vitality to inanimate material.
