For this allegorical personification of France, Rodin returned to the features of his assistant and lover, the sculptor Camille Claudel (French, 1864–1943), despite the fact that their relationship ended at least ten years earlier. In 1912 a cast of this work was presented by the French people to the United States in commemoration of explorer Samuel de Champlain’s discovery of the lake that bears his name.
